POP MUSIC + MATHS + BUSINESS = CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS OF THE FUTURE

Three artists, one tour contract and unlimited learning, the Tune into Business project – which is part of The b-live Foundation’s integrated curriculum programme for schools – asked students to step into the shoes of a record industry executive to choose which of three music acts to invest their money in. Using their organisational and maths skills, as well as real-life business analysis tools, they were asked to decide which music act would score a sell-out tour.

Student and b-live member Chrissy Brooks observed: “It [Tune into Business] was a unique project - the fact that we were learning about artists was good as everyone likes music and can relate to it. The project made learning fun.”

Sue Rose, Assistant Head at Caroline Chisholm School agrees: “Tune into Business is a ready-made high quality learning solution that integrates with the business and maths curriculum. Engaging projects like these really do help the students to attain higher grades.”

Tune into Business, which included meticulous lesson plans and assessments, was developed by The b-live Foundation as part of its Employability Programme to bring lessons to life and work skills into the classroom. It was funded by ICAEW, which is keen to have a positive social impact, and make chartered accountancy accessible and attractive to the employees of the future.

BENEFITS FOR STUDENTS

Louise Mason from ICAEW: “Engaging with students at the right level and in the right context is crucial so that they can understand how chartered accountancy fits into the real world. It’s not just number crunching – it’s all about interacting with people and making informed decisions. Tune into Business really communicated this and using The Foundation’s Employability Programme enabled us to reach thousands of students.”

The Employability Programme is part of the Foundation’s wider programme for schools, a pioneering scheme that brings together students, schools and employers to increase social mobility. It allows students to test their skills in real-life situations, helps schools to achieve higher attainment levels and enables employers to teach young people about career options.

Putting the social mobility of young people at the heart of its service, the Foundation engages uniquely with students at an individual level to build confidence, raise aspirations and develop key employability skills.

Raised aspirations + Increased confidence + Engaged in learning = Positive social impact
