SOCIAL MEDIA – RAISING AWARENESS, INCREASING ENGAGEMENT, PROMOTING CITIZENSHIP

‘Never mess wiv a match’. The grammar isn’t perfect but the understanding is.
To promote fire safety in the home among hard-to-reach teens, Bedfordshire and Luton Fire Rescue Service (BLFRS) joined forces with The b-live Foundation to develop a targeted and innovative campaign delivered entirely through state-of-the-art social media at www.b-live.com

Tapping into its large online community The Foundation set up a secure club on its eye-catching website and invited Bedfordshire students to create a snappy fire safety slogan that young people would remember. This engaging approach set out to explore young people’s experience of learning about fire safety and challenged them to identify fire hazards hidden in status updates on The Foundation’s online forums. The winners were rewarded with a visit to a local fire station.

“Going onto b-live’s website and using social media for this competition made it loads more fun. I was able to talk to other people my age about what they know about fire safety, and there was lots of different careers information on the website which was really interesting. Visiting the fire station was brilliant – we got to learn about being safe in a fun way,” said Brittany Rose Richardson, whose slogan TEST your ALARM to be SAFE from HARM was selected as one of the winning entrants.

Tanja Kuveljic from The Foundation worked with BLFRS to formulate the campaign: “We work with nearly 300,000 young people so we were able to offer expert advice to BLFRS about how best to communicate with its target audience. The social media approach we devised helped us to share serious messages in an imaginative and relevant way. I’m thrilled with how the students engaged with the campaign.”

BLFRS endorse The Foundation’s use of social media to deliver crucial messages. Deputy Chief Fire Officer Glen Ranger said: “The safety of young people is of paramount importance to Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service. We are pleased to be working in partnership with b-live and our local schools, using vibrant, online social media to engage with young people in Key Stages 3-5 in a way they understand. We are using this innovative approach to successfully raise awareness of the dangers of fire and road risks, to communicate key safety messages in an interesting way to a wide group of young people across our county.”

The Foundation’s website is one strand of its programme for schools, which also includes integrated lesson plans, school visits, careers information and interactive media, all delivered in partnership with schools and employers.
