SOCIAL ENTERPRISE’S INTERACTIVE CAREERS APPROACH BRINGS CONSTRUCTION INTO THE CLASSROOM
The year is 2050 and the world is facing a population crisis...this intriguing setting was the start point for students around the country when they were challenged to design eco-friendly buildings that could be launched into orbit as part of a new global village. School teams were pitched against each other, with the winning designs replicated in virtual 3D and exhibited at Ecobuild 2011.
The b-live Foundation worked with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) to develop INNERSPACE 2050, a creative co-ordinated careers scheme of work for schools and employers to engage students, teach skills and inform career choices. The project, which integrated into the mainstream curriculum, included lesson plans, a DVD and school visits from construction employees. The approach was completed through engaging interactive content on The Foundation’s website www.b-live.com where, for example, students could build their CV and receive personalised careers information.
Tanja Kuveljic from The Foundation: “Projects like INNERSPACE 2050 are at the heart of The Foundation’s work and just one part of a wider Schools Programme that the organisation is rolling out across the UK. They are a superb example of how we engage with partners to develop solutions that embrace all aspects of careers guidance, raising aspirations and increasing confidence. It can be a life-changing experience for students.”
b-live member and student at The Dukeries College, Joe Glover said: “INNERSPACE 2050 was brilliant – it didn’t feel like lessons at all. We got to watch a DVD all about the project and someone came to talk to us about how to design buildings. We even got to go online to find out more about jobs in the building trade. It was really interesting to see that what I learnt in the classroom will actually help me in the real world.”
BENEFITS FOR STUDENTS
Deputy Head Cheryl Zanker agrees: “When employers support schools to integrate workplace skills into the mainstream curriculum students are engaged and ultimately can make more informed career decisions INNERSPACE 2050, was a really good example of this: it was dynamic, creative and successful – the students loved taking part.”
It wasn’t only the students and teachers who benefited from the INNERSPACE project: Bridget Bartlett, Chief Operating Officer of the CIOB: “Working with The Foundation through its Schools Programme we were able to develop this utterly innovative approach which included multi-media, classroom and online engagement with the students. People who perhaps never would have thought of the construction industry being relevant to them were suddenly given this wonderful opportunity to learn more about what we do and to build their work-ready skills in a creative way.
Raised aspirations + Increased confidence + Engaged in learning = Positive social impact
