Our search for the region’s most talented young broadcast journalists is over and the winners names revealed...
In June 2009 b-live, in conjunction with Big Lottery Fund and ITV News, launched Over to You – a region to region search to find the brightest young broadcasting talent in England and Wales.
Under the guidance of their teacher, student teams were asked to produce a local news story that captured the hearts and minds of their community. As well as providing participants with a rare insight into the broadcast industry, Over to You was designed to nurture key skills across the curriculum including literacy and media.
The prize on offer to the 12 regional winning teams was to work with their local ITV news team to produce their story from page to small screen. 12 runner-up teams from each of the participating regions will be rewarded with £100 toward a community project of their choice.
This year, Over to You received a record number of entries from across England and Wales with 138 schools entering the competition and 10,960 students taking part.
The competition closed on 13th November 2009 and after several weeks of intense judging, the ITV news teams named 12 teams as overall winners. To see the full list of winners and runners up by region see the Over to You Competition Winners 2009 link below.
The b-live Foundation, ITV News and Big Lottery Fund wish to thank everybody who took part in Over to You and for the level of commitment shown by schools.
ITV director Guy Phillips says, "Our work with b-live helps us to provide teachers with a way of engaging young people in media and journalism. We ran the competition to give students a taste of what it’s like to identify and produce a local news story. The competition also illustrated the breadth of opportunities which are available on both sides of camera.
“The quality of the entries was outstanding and the story ideas were well thought through and presented. The winning schools won their regional competition thanks to their enthusiasm and great understanding of what makes a topical news story.”
““The standard of entries this year was phenomenally high,” adds Tanja Kuveljic, managing director of The b-live Foundation. “We were extremely impressed by the hard work and dedication shown by both students and teachers alike. This year’s competition has certainly confirmed that the future of TV broadcasting is safe in the hands of this ambitious generation of young journalists!”
Over to You hopes to return in 2011 and The b-live Foundation trusts those schools that weren’t successful this time around will be keen to apply again.
