Working alongside the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, b-live has a 100% commitment to provide a safe and secure online environment for young people…
Proven security measures include:
1. Registration Security
- Schools are validated by b-live admin
- Use of presentation password — auto-generated per school
- Students with partial access to be validated by school — full access only granted after validation
- All users must agree to abide by the b-live terms and conditions of use.
2. Community Area security
- Must be fully registered – only registered users can view the community areas
- Published profiles will remain anonymous – username driven rather than real name driven. No emails, phone numbers or other personal details will be displayed
- Closed website, only students can access – teachers and parents cannot view community areas
- Swear filter — users sent message along the lines of ‘your post contains potentially offensive language — is this appropriate content?’. This method will have less of a big brother feel to it than forbidding any offensive posts — kids use swear words and we want this to feel ‘real’
- Full moderation of site carried out daily; including weekends and bank holidays
- A downloadable code of conduct guides students on what is and isn’t allowed in the social networking areas; as well as how to stay safe online
- Termly editorial campaigns remind users of membership rules
- Members are kept informed of every update to the Terms & Conditions
- User-defined age restrictions on forums and clubs. This will be managed by the member posting the content but can be overwritten by b-live admin in the CMS
- ‘Report this post’ functionality
- User reporting a post will be asked to quantify why they are reporting it – will promote accountability and prevent indiscriminate (or discriminate) reporting of posts
- Block user’ functionality on email
- Members can only instant message those users that have accepted them as friends, there is a ‘Remove from friends’ functionality to block unwanted contact
- The ultimate sanction for users abusing the community areas is removal from the site
- Security reviews are carried out each term to ensure all measures are kept up to date and relevant.
3. b-live staff and general website security
- CRB checked staff
- All staff held by an internal web access agreement that restricts contact with users
- The handling of Student data and registration conforms to the 1998 Data Protection Act
- SSL certificate and Server FirewallsAdmin only accessible from b-live office – fixed IP. Even teachers cannot access student login information
- Schools are only given one admin user. This will enable easy ‘locking down’ if any security breach is suspected. This user is administered through b-live admin
- Accounts revert to limited access to community areas at 21yrs
- Dedicated hosting solution in secure data centre.
